Ask the Sleep Team: What is it Like to Take a Home Sleep Test?

I suspect that I have sleep apnea. I have been feeling exhausted almost every single day for years now. I sometimes nod off on the job or feel myself falling asleep at the wheel in traffic on the way home. My wife says I snore, and she often goes to the other room to get away from it so she can sleep. I know I need to get tested, but I hate the idea of sleeping in a lab. I’ve heard about home sleep testing, but I don’t know what it’s about. What is it like to have a home sleep test done?

Sleep Team’s Answer:

Home sleep testing is a wonderful alternative to in-lab sleep studies for diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea. Most patients find it very easy and comfortable to use, and sleep much better for their study than they would in a lab. It can be very effective for diagnosis, although on rare occasions, the patient may need to do an in-lab study after their home sleep test if the sleep physician suspects that they may have other complications that need to be addressed. Let’s take a look at a couple of videos about home sleep testing:

In this clip, one patient describes her experience with using a home sleep testing device. It’s always helpful to hear real accounts from real people about their experiences. As you can see, she had a relatively uneventful experience and was able to successfully diagnose and treat her sleep apnea from her home sleep test:
